Finally.

:) I can’t wait for snow again! I wanna take pics of pretty snowflakes! <3

So this means I gotta work real hard. D: Sigh. this just complicated things for me.

Update: =P I just worked it out. It’ll take me 3 months to get things back to where they were. :D Hopefully I stay within the budget. :D

Dec 15

heh. /insert smugness

Sooo. I’m done with finals. :D so happy! Am currently at the airport right now, waiting for my flight in ATLANTA and then off to LOS ANGELES! :D hee.

This is like, the highlight of my semester. :D gonna savor the taste of Sin City and Tinseltown while I can, as I soak up the sights. :D

So, about my exams. I think I’m doing well this semester, with the exception of Biology, of course. Barring any freakish outcomes, and with the predicted D in Bio, I should be getting GPA 3.38. Imagine if, by some freakish miracle, I get a C in Bio, my GPA will be 3.47. I’m trying to get it up to 3.8/3.9.

I’m not bragging or anything, but I do feel really good putting in a bit of effort into my education. I’ve always mostly relied too much on my own perceived intelligence rather than work on it. So it’s kinda satisfying when you actually realize your work paid off! I’ll (hopefully) be doing the same thing for next year. :)

So, technically I didn’t work as hard as other people would. I just worked hard on studying smarter. :P In Physics, I hardly ever pay attention, so I try to do the homework and gain more understanding from there. In Japanese, you gotta pay attention, so I did. Turns out I’m a fast learner for language. What else? Martial arts was fun. Got an A. Ooo Abnormal Psychology. It is such fun subject, I love it, although towards the later chapters were too boring for me.

Heh. In other words, God is with me. Even in bio. I’m actually doing well in lab, so it’s no biggie. Too bad lab isn’t a different course :(

Anyway, what else?? Oooh. Holidays! Yes. Going on another vacation! <3 :) This time to the West Coast. In Spring, after getting my licence, imma hit up the East Coast, and maybe a trip to down to FLORIDA and upwards to OHIO. Florida for Disneyworld, and OHIO for Cedar Point – home of awesome rollercoasters. :D and summer for other places I may have not visited yet, or Europe. Depends. Ooh, perhaps next winter break in Hawaii! :D Yeah baby. Livin’ it up! :D

So that’s about it for now. :D heh. Toodles.

Busy semester

Posted on Thursday, December 8, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Friends' Asylum, Sheer Boredom

Been a long time since there was a real post.

Got a pay raise – I’m gonna divvy up and use my pay for: electricity, internet & phone bill. Gonna put in more hours next semester so I can save up for an anime con/spn con.

Went to Chicago for Thanksgiving again – Black Friday was kinda dull, not much sales. Went with Uma, Renu & KW. Met up with Fatin & Emily and their other halves. Went around downtown Chicago, took lots of pics, gonna upload them to deviantart soon.

Put my crafts & writing ventures on hold – I just don’t have time anymore. Still very much inspired, and still connected to my creative muse, but I gotta manage my time better than this to make something worthwhile.

What else? Oh, and I learned to cook 2 vege dishes, and chicken curry. – Renu says they’re all good. Next challenge is nasi minyak. And rendang.

Getting As for four of my subjects, and failing my bio. – Physics, Martial Arts, Japanese 101, Abnormal Psychology. Hopefully that would keep my GPA afloat. ><

Made progress on the social front – getting along well with colleagues and lab partners without being too professional. :P

And going for a winter break in the West Coast! Going Lerdie & her sister to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and San Diego. Definitely stopping by at the casinos, Disneyland, and Alcatraz. :)

Can’t wait!

My cousins have kids now. Technically their kids would be kinda like my cousins right? Lol. But we’re kinda close, like siblings, so we just ignored the technicalities. :P I now have 4 nephews.

Okies, that’s all for now.

redemption.

Posted on Sunday, November 13, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Personal, Thoughts

Today, the host at my church told us an anecdote about our school’s volleyball team. Basically, he knew 2 of the girls on the team, and their dads were from other states farther away. It was their last game – they were seniors – and they were playing a tough team – USF. They were losing the first 2 games, picked up the slack in other 2 sets, until the last tiebreaker game. We lost, but it didn’t matter. The dads came running in, and hugged their kids, and basically told them how proud they were – despite losing the game.

He related this to how God’s like to us. He loves us, is proud of us, despite our failings.

And that broke me. I’ve been struggling with living as who I am, as a Christian, and I’m just really happy to be reminded of the truth: God still loves me, although I disappoint him. He’s there, cheering me on – though I’m beginning to feel hopeless about my studies.

And being reminded of how awesome of a dad He is just makes me miss my own dad. Someone who’s living up to God’s standards with all that he can. I miss home.

Broke, Starving & Homesick: The College Student’s Guide to Cooking on Your Own

Posted on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in College Life, Guides

First off, I’d like to preface the post with a little note: If you have any tips whatsoever, feel free to let me know and I’ll post it up here. :)

On a Tight Budget

  • Plan ahead – this goes without saying, I think. But plan your menu in advance – for the week, and for every meal.
  • Consider having fruits for breakfast/dessert – they’re nutritious, and are usually cheap.
  • When trying out a new recipe, use small quantities of everything – go with your guts! Season your food according to your taste, not follow some recipe. We normally cook chicken dishes, so between my housemate and I, we use half a chicken breast and cut it real small.
  • I think most chain grocery stores let you have this membership card thing with which you can scan whenever you buy so you get the discounted price. So go for that, if you haven’t. It’s usually free of charge.
  • Check your mail often – this is how you get informed of awesome deals at your local grocery store.
  • Make a shopping list, and try to stick to it as close as you can.
  • Shop on a full stomach. Shopping with an empty one will only increase the likelihood of you overspending.
  • Save up on containers! So you don’t have to buy lots of them to store your food. Butter containers, ice cream containers, beer bottles (yes, I use beer bottles for soup, and then use cling wrap to secure it.)

No time to cook!

Seriously? Then you suck at time management. Period.

  • Consider the ingredients you use regularly: onions, garlic, ginger, chicken/beef/pork/fish, broccoli, cabbage. Cut these items in your spare time/while waiting for a dish to cook, and store the extra in containers. :) Divide the meat into your meal portions, and store them in the freezer.
  • Defrosting meat – this goes hand in hand with the point about planning ahead. When you’re sure you want to eat chicken/beef/pork, before leaving for school, defrost your meat in a container and leave it out in the sink.
  • For a recipe you’re sure of, or had the experience with, cook in huge portions – and divide these portions according to your mealtimes and store them in the fridge.
  • If you prefer eating rice every day, then cook about 3 cups of rice – should last you about 6 meals.
  • While stir-frying your vegetables, spices or other ingredients, put chicken in a microwaveable bowl filled with water and microwave it for 2 minutes. It should be almost cooked by then, and you can have less cooking time. It’s a cheat, yes.
  • Marinating – if your dish requires marinating, then try to marinate it overnight. :) This will ensure that the taste seeps into the meat. Of course, while you do your laundry, you can marinate the dish first for 30-60 mins. :)
  • While cooking, clean up! This will save you lots of time afterward. Wash the dishes while you wait for your dish to simmer in the saucepan, or clean up the other stoves and counters. Prepare your plates and cutlery for your meal.
  • Before cooking your main dish, cook the rice.

So far, it’s worked for me. All these time-savers actually made me enjoy cooking more, as I’m able to get involve in the process rather than whine about how difficult it is to work alone. My housemate and I usually work together. We take turns preparing the main dish while the other person cleans up and washes the dishes after we’re done. When either one of us has an exam, the other one will cook. When I’m working solo, I take up about an hour – for both preparation and cooking, because I multitask. When both of us have an exam, we make sure to just cook extra portions the meal before so that we can just reheat stuff.

Just another reminder: If you have anything else to share, please feel free to let me know! :)

my food life.

Posted on Saturday, November 5, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Sheer Boredom

unimaginative title, though it describes this post aptly.

i’m just gonna list down the dishes i can make successfully, thus far:

  • bak choy soup
  • molten chocolate lava cake
  • cabbage with soy sauce
  • rendang
  • peanut butter chicken nuggets
  • cola chicken
  • roti bakar
  • french toast

dishes i’d like to try within the next couple of weeks:

  • chicken pot pie
  • malaysian curry (from scratch)
  • cauliflower cream soup
  • red bean bun
  • hokkien mee + make own noodle =P
  • make own rendang paste
  • make own roti canai

ambitious? kinda. but renu and i work together on most of the recipes (not the chinese ones. =P) i mostly cook from memory, actually. it’s actually kinda fun trying to figure out what my grandma/mom put into the dish, and try to replicate that distinctive taste. gosh. i’m actually thinking about cola chicken right now. haha. i’ll probably post up a few things regarding cooking on a tight budget.

frustration. ignorance.

Posted on Monday, October 17, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Friends' Asylum, Personal, Rants, Thoughts

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — Matthew 7:1-2

“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”– Luke 6:27-28.

it’s so frustrating for me.

Dear Daddy,

i know that you’ve been in my shoes. people have been judging you since day 1. they took one look at you, and they hated you first. even your friends turned against you.

i pray for my friends, and me. i pray that in whatever i do, i will endure it with your patience, your love, your faith. i pray that no matter what, i will try to see it through your eyes, and to love with your heart. i pray also that in doing so, my friends would be transformed too, and so will i.

i pray that i will remain strong in my faith, that i will not be tempted to follow the ways of the world. i will not strive to be accepted by them, but to be different, and to embrace the ones who are cast aside by the world’s hurtful ignorance. i pray for those who judge me, Lord, for they do know not what they are doing.

Daddy, i pray for your mercy and grace to cover me always. keep me grounded in your love. keep my feet firmly planted in your ways. Lord, forgive me when i judge others. i have forgotten just how much i should be judged.

Amen.

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — Matthew 7:1-2; “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”– Luke 6:27-28.

pent-up emotions.

Posted on Wednesday, October 5, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Friends' Asylum, Personal, Rants, Thoughts

i don’t usually get so riled up much. lately, that’s been an exception.

i work only 8 hours a week, but i mostly have to cook and also go for tutoring. i do not have time for myself. fridays and sundays are of course, for God. not begrudging him for that. in fact, it is because i’m so out of it and so tired that i realized just how important time management is.

okay, i’m writing this post not to pick my time management skills apart, but to let out how i feel. i guess my heart has been so hard for so long it’s a shock for me to feel this much. but it’s been like, 3 months now, so i guess i’m holding up pretty well. :)

anyway.

i’m the kind of person who doesn’t like being belittled – for anything (can be bad in some cases). i hate it when someone tosses a comment that makes me sound worthless 0r useless. whenever someone dishes out that sort of comment, i rise up to the challenge, so to speak.

so lately a friend of mine has been saying things that are getting waaaaaaaaaaay under my skin. i don’t think she knows what she’s doing, other than asserting her superiority in the field, so i guess what i’m dealing with here is a case of inflated ego. here’s a list of things that she’s said that’s got me all fired up:

- i’ve known you for a year, think i don’t know you well enough?
- your cooking? omg, your housemate isn’t gonna get diarrhea right? (or something to that effect)
- you? dance? oh please. are you sure you’re not making a fool out of yourself?
- you? keep your room neat? really???
- you, bake? please don’t burn the house down.

oh, gee, i wonder what’s next? “oh, you, ALIVE???”

==

so i rose to the occasion. i danced harder, i danced better. when i play badminton, i make her run. when i cook, i perfect it. when i clean my room, I DAMN WELL MAKE SURE IT’S DAMN CLEAN. and when i start baking, baby, you’re gonna be licking my toes.

just because they know me for a year, doesn’t mean they know me completely. i don’t even judge you. i don’t even think that one year is enough to tell me who you really are. i can cook now, and i know how to break the recipe apart and figure things out. i can analyze it and tailor it to my needs. and when i dance, sure i will suck at first, but hey, watch me move after 2 lessons, and i’d tell ya, you’ll be running out of breath to catch up with me. i cleaned my room, and i shall maintain it. i will start baking. and you will loveeeeeee it.

i won’t even deign to tell it to your face. i don’t need to prove anything to you, because these are skill sets that i’m interested in developing in myself. i just wish that you’ll give me more room to be someone. a human. an individual.

but i guess the only thing you’re interested in is in proving me a weakling.

you know something?

i am not.

i am capable in anything i choose to be, through Him who strengthens me.

by the end of next week, i shall be able to bake 2 kinds of pie, 3 new dishes and 2 new soups.

yes, this is my pride talking. probably. i don’t know. i just want a challenge. i will rise up to it.

watch me.

Sep 24

a month’s absence

Posted on Saturday, September 24, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Friends' Asylum

I’ll try to explain why I went missing for a whole month from the blogosphere in under 15 minutes.

First of all, since I got back to Morgantown, I moved out of Pierpont, and into a new apartment! I have my own room, and two housemates. It’s a pretty neat setup – a huge kitchen & living room and bathroom. So far, our visitors have had positive comments about our place. =) They said they like the light color of the carpet, and the plainness of the walls. I quite like it too – feels so much more spacious than it is. :P Bad point? There’s poor ventilation. =( It’s so hot during the summer, and we had to turn on the air conditioner. Even with the aircond on, we couldn’t feel it at all when we went to our bedrooms. So I bought myself a fan. =P

Then, I started work. My shifts have been irregular lately, but that’s okay. I’m getting paid at least, and my bills are covered. :) So my living expenses are kinda taken care of, in that respect. I get paid minimum wage, but I’m really happy that I’m getting paid at all. =P I work as a copy editor at the school newspaper – The Daily Athenaeum. It’s been fun working there, although I don’t talk much to my colleagues unless absolutely necessary. XD I mostly keep to myself, do my job, do my homework and get the heck outta there when it’s time to leave. =P Very dedicated. XD

School has been … passive aggressive with me actually. =P I’m doing well in Japanese 101, Abnormal Psychology and Physics 102. =) Biology 219 remains as the bane of my existence. I gotta work harder on that, because I’d like to keep my grades up. God has been kind in this area, too. =)

On top of that, I’m involved in the Global Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, Phi Sigma Pi, and Forensic Science Club. I’ve made new friends too! So it’s been a good semester so far, and I intend to keep it that way. Of course, with all these things going around me, I’m really exhausted. It’s been a month, and I’ve not fully rested (read: sleep in on weekends). It’s the Louisiana State Uni vs. WVU game this weekend, and I failed to get a ticket. =( I’m going over to Trevor’s place with Mikaela to watch it on TV instead, while Renu will be going with Chris and the rest to the game. I should’ve gotten myself a Maniac membership! ugh.

On a light note, there’s this guy in my Forensics club that I kinda have a crush on. =P kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. oh well. he’s probably younger than me, but who cares? =P And there’s the Asian dude I see around a lot. =P and the African American dude who works at the Rec Center. :D Two out of three actually know my existence, so it’s not such a bad thing. =P

So basically, these are the main things I wish I could write more of, but I can’t as I’m rushing for Bible study later at 6. So I’m heading to Cold Stone to meet up with Uma and hang out with her there, and then go to Karla’s place.

Gotta go!

Awesome Date Ideas

Posted on Sunday, July 31, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Lists, Personal, Sheer Boredom, There's Us

Pretend you’ve never met, then loudly try out lame pickup lines in a swanky bar. Act like they worked.

  1. Go on a walking journey and every fifteen feet draw a chalk arrow in the direction you’re going. At the end of the trip, leave a big pile of chalk.
  2. Create photo evidence suggesting that you went on an adventure that didn’t really happen
  3. Go for a drive. You can only make right-hand turns. When you finally get stuck, turn around and then you can only make left-hand turns. Repeat until you find something interesting. Take pictures along the way!
  4. Build forts out of furniture and blankets, and wage war with paper airplanes.
  5. Go to a major chain bookstore, and leave notes to future readers in copies of your favorite books
  6. Write a piece of fiction together. Outside at a cafe. Ask strangers when you get stuck.
  7. Try and visit as many people as you can in one night, and turn as many things inside their apartment upside down as you can, without them noticing.
  8. Do the lamest tourist thing in your area that you have both secretly wanted to do forever. Have an unabashed good time!
  9. Hide and seek in the park
  10. Go around the city with sidewalk chalk and draw hearts with equations inside on random things
  11. Drive somewhere unknown and have dinner in a city you’ve never been to. With fake names.
  12. Go for a drive with the passenger blindfolded, choosing directions at random. see where you end up
  13. Dress up as pirates, commandeer shopping carts, and have a war upon the high seas.. er, parking lot.
  14. Go on a search for as many good climbing trees as possible, climb as high as you both can in all of them, compile photo evidence
  15. Rent a movie you’ve never seen before. Set on mute and improvise dialogue.
  16. Dress up as pirates and go parrot shopping at local pet stores
  17. Go to the airport, get the cheapest, soonest departing flight to anywhere when you show up, and stay there for a weekend.
  18. Walk around a city and perform short silent plays in front of security cameras
  19. In the middle of the night, drive to the beach, so you arrive just as the sun is rising. Have a breakfast picnic, then fall asleep together. Bring a sun umbrella.

A Short Sojourn in the West.

Posted on Sunday, July 17, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Holidays

I spent about two weeks in Nilai and KL. I can’t exactly sum the experience up in one word, though in hindsight, I’d say that it was definitely an experience for me that showed that I could thrive well outside my cocoon.

For one, I hardly know anyone back in CF. Most of my friends now run in different circles, and some are more preoccupied with … new friends. I didn’t reconnect much with my older, closer friends from before. In fact, I established newer friendships with some familiar faces, and some newer faces. It was interesting, to say the least. I wish I had more opportunity to get to know more people, and to spend time with them… though a part of me knew that I have at last found closure.

I used to think that INTI was home. As they say, “Home is where the heart is,” and when your heart isn’t there anymore… it really isn’t home anymore. Not really. But I didn’t feel like a guest. I just made it into a time of reflection, and just basically getting to know more people. Besides, I felt completely at odds with the way things were. I couldn’t bring myself to fit into the picture. I usually could, but then I realized… I changed.

It was a memorable time indeed, though. I did receive word that I was intimidating to some of the newer faces, (LOL) and well, I quite enjoyed that. I don’t care though. Never did. lol.

Anyway, this chapter of my life is closed now. I’m happy that it’s over, finally, and I can move on. to bigger and better things.

i’d say. weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

my life so far?

FREAKING AWESOME.

i had to take my test about two nights ago. so happy i’m living in a GMT+8 zone. XD i get to procrastinate for about 8 hours more. freaking nice. anyway, psyc101 test. it was okay. not very satisfied i didn’t score 100. but i’m pretty much happy about the marks i got though. not a bad start at all. :) 96. weeeeeeeeee.

then there’s my english process paper. also another last min job. =P got my feedback. positively glowing reviews!

and i’ve just finished shooting some product pics for my bracelets and bookmarks i made. four charm bracelets, five bookmarks. i’ll post them up after editing them later. on top of that, i’ve shot some nice flower pics lately. which reminds me, i gotta look up on pointers on how to shoot when it’s midday. i took a few shots of the flowers just now, and i found something interesting. hehe. shall try it again tomorrow, and see what i can come up with. i never really understood why photographers try to shoot in natural light as much as possible, but today it finally dawned on me. no pun intended. =P anyway, lesson learned!

so i’ve been really busy lately. ah. and i ordered more stuff from beading.com.my to stock up on my jewelry supplies. =) next project: origami! i’m gonna try out making some complex models, and see if i can miniaturize it somehow. =) wayyyyyy too many ideas. =P

alrighty. gotta go now. toodles!

Jun 2

nightmare.

Posted on Thursday, June 2, 2011 in College Life, Daily Motions, Holidays, Sheer Boredom

EMERGENCY ALERT: PIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! =( gah.

alrighty, back to topic.

i haven’t had the time to indulge in all the summer plans that i set out to do. been busy trying to make sure i get my coursework completed before i start on anything else. i shall revise this silly plan of taking summer courses later. gah. unfortunately, i have another course lined up in the second half of summer. english 102 would be completed by then.

english 102 involves a lot of discussion work! it’s just annoying that i have a deadline when to post in the forum and such, and you have to respond to your classmates comment. =/ i think that having it with just 2 days in between to post something makes it inconvenient. gah. and you need it for participation grade. *grinds teeth*snarls* gah. whatev. so i have to start on my third process paper now, and figure it out. *growls*

psychology 101 is interesting, to say the least. i’m quite pleased with the overall layout. i can do the assignments by a certain due date, and they’re not all due within two days of each other or anything like that. it sorts of allows me to assign a block of time just to complete my assignments. right now i’m still preparing for my first exam – 50 questions in 50 minutes worth 100 points – so things are pretty hectic. i shall try to prepare for the second and third exams while simultaneously read up on the topics to complete my quizzes and assignments. shouldn’t be too hard.

i can’t wait for british literature! i just want to get it done and over with. i do wonder if we have to study the classics though. hopefully they wouldn’t ask us to find some weird, obscure version that i can’t just glean off the internet. hehe. alrighty, i gotta go out for breakfast now!

May 15

Day trip to Washington DC

It was splendid! I went with Yanty & Grace. :) It was a four-hour journey, and we left about 7.30 in the morning.

We parked at the East Potomac Park, since it was free. First stop was the Jefferson Memorial, and we spent some time there before heading to the Lincoln Memorial. The Reflecting Pool was still under construction, unfortunately, but it was still a sight to behold! I loved it. We then head on to the Washington Monument, but didn’t go up since they ran out of tickets and we were pressed for time. After that, we took a break by having some chilli dogs and ice cream. Brilliant lunch, I say. After resting our poor feet, we walked on to the Freer Gallery of Art, one of the Smithsonian’s museums, and then went to the National Air and Space museum. :) After wandering about, we took the Metro to the White House, and came up from the back. So we got to see the backyard. XD It was interesting to see how the people are just so … welcomed to photograph the White House so easily, and no one stops you from taking the tourist shots. Oh, we also went to the State Capitol, and took a picture from the distance. We were so tired that we just didn’t wanna walk anymore. We met up with Yanty’s friend in Maryland for dinner, at a Thai restaurant. Ooh, the Salmon Fillet was delicious. So was Yanty’s duck. Absolutely delectable! <3

The journey back was splendid, and Grace passed out so I had to stay up and keep Yanty awake. We had to drive in the rain, which made things worse, but we managed anyway. By the time we got home, it was 1am. Fwah. I passed out, and woke up at 1pm the next day. XD 12 hours. awesome sleep man.
